Who are we?
We are a team of experienced Himalayan trekking guides. We are also enthusiastic and committed social workers. Based in Kathmandu, most of us hail from Tsum Valley, where we are deeply connected to the people, culture and lifestyle.
Our team leader is Mr. Sonam Lama, who was born and raised in a small village in Tsum Valley just a few doors away from the birth home of Choktul Tenzin Phuntsok Rinpoche-a reincarnated Buddhist monk of Lama Kunchyok from Tibet whose remarkable life, passing and rebirth in Tsum Valley was recently highlighted in the award-winning film “Unmistaken Child”.
Sonam is an architect who works in Kathmandu. He was educated in Tsum Valley, Gorkha Bazaar and Kathmandu, Nepal. In addition to this work, Sonam is also a social architect who served as secretary of the Tsum Welfare Committee, a local organization whose goal is to improve life in Tsum Valley while respecting and preserving traditional culture and lifestyles.
He developed an interest and passion for trekking when he met a handful of travelers in his village in the early 1980’s. At that time, travel to Tsum Valley by foreigners was very restricted and only allowed for scientific or research teams with a special permit. He was amazed to meet people from afar who travelled as a well-equipped team, since trekking had simply been a necessary form of transportation for Sonam to walk to school, work or do a pilgrimage.
Meeting people from different countries and cultures encouraged Sonam to study English so he could talk and interact with them, and inspired him to get involved in developing tourism as an economically-sustainable activity in Tsum Valley.
